Hilo, Hawaii

November 24, 2017

In Hilo, Hawaii, on “The Big Island” we went to a national park called Hawaii Volcanoes, we went and saw the volcano from an observatory overlooking the crater. We got Junior Ranger badges there, we had to work hard for those badges as they were our last ones! We got to see a movie about how the people who came to settle the island of Hilo destroyed it by bringing their animals, because their animals wiped out several native species. We also did a hike, well not really a hike because we did like three 0.4-mile-long hikes.

We learned a lot about recycling and how the Hawaiian Islands were formed. We also saw this cool machine that detects eruptions, so when you stomp it tracks the vibrations. It draws the lines in ink like a sound machine.

We also rented a cool, fancy Chevy to drive around the island – it wasn’t like a sports car, but it was cool.
